Laboratory for Telecommunications at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana is participating in the national research and development project NEO-TWIN – Next-Generation Methods, Tools and Products for Innovative Diagnostics and Prognostics of Electric Vehicles Based on Digital Twins. Coordinated by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Ljubljana, the project brings together leading Slovenian research institutions and industrial partners to develop advanced technologies for the next generation of electric vehicles.
Digital twins are becoming one of the key building blocks of modern electric vehicles. They enable continuous monitoring of batteries, electric machines, and other critical components, support fault prediction, and optimize vehicle performance. As digital twins continuously exchange data between the vehicle, edge computing systems, and cloud infrastructure, their reliable operation is inherently dependent on robust cybersecurity.
Within the project, LTFE will be developing methods and technologies to ensure the cyber resilience of the NEO-TWIN platform. The research focuses on security mechanisms for protecting communication channels, continuous cybersecurity monitoring of digital twins, and the detection and mitigation of cyber threats in hybrid Information Technology/Operational Technology (IT/OT) environments. As part of the project, LTFE will also contribute to the development of an interoperable digital twin platform, with security mechanisms integrated from the earliest stages of system design. This security-by-design approach enables continuous monitoring of the platform’s cybersecurity posture while reducing the risks associated with unauthorized access, data manipulation, and disruptions to the operation of safety-critical vehicle functions.
The technologies developed within NEO-TWIN will enhance the reliability and trustworthiness of digital twins while enabling the secure deployment of advanced services such as real-time diagnostics, predictive maintenance, and over-the-air (OTA) software and model updates.
Through its participation in NEO-TWIN, LTFE is strengthening its research at the intersection of telecommunications, cybersecurity, and intelligent cyber-physical systems, contributing to the development of technologies that will play a key role in shaping the future of electric mobility.
