The 5G-themed international EUCNC 2018 conference was held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from 18 to 21 June in the Cultural and Congress Centre Cankarjev Dom. The world-wide major scientific conference was hosted by the University of Ljubljana and Jožef Stefan Institute.

The University of Ljubljana was represented by the ICT department of Faculty of Electrical Engineering with Laboratories for Telecommunications and Multimedia and the Laboratory for Radiation and Optics. The organization of the conference was co-led by the doc. dr. Mojca Volk from the Laboratory for Telecommunications. Laboratories have presented their solutions for emergency call systems, virtual and enriching reality, blockchain technology, e-learning and an electro-optic oscillator in 5G networks. Jernej Mihelj, a co-worker at the Laboratory for Telecommunications, presented the poster with the title “Distributed Ledger Technology-Based Ownership Management in Social IoT”. The laboratory for radiation and optics was represented by Mahmet Apl Ilgaz with the article Application of Opto-Electronic Oscillator and 5G Networks.

The seventeenth EuCNC conference, with the slogan “5G and beyond”, is one of the most important conferences in the field of communications and networks in Europe, the main focus of which is on 5G technologies and their further development and use in different domains. More than 500 experts from industry and research institutions gave insights into research, development, implementation of 5G technologies and presented the latest scientific and development achievements. The first results of the 1st and 2nd stages of the European project 5G H2020 were also presented.

The event was also backed by the Ministry of Public Administration of the Republic of Slovenia, responsible for the field of digitization, and placed the 5G in the core of the strategy for technological development. The conference and the stand of the University of Ljubljana were visited by the Minister of Public Administration Boris Koprivnikar and the Minister of Education, Science and Sport, dr. Maja Makovec Brenčič.

EuCNC 2018 had a strong backing from prominent industrial 5G players, including this year’s gold
patron Huawei, bronze patrons Nokia and Ericsson and several further patrons, including
Rohde&Schwarz, Iskratel and Telekom Slovenij

IEEE Explorer data base.
