The Laboratory of Telecommunications (LTFE) at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana, is participating in the SMART-LIVING research and development programme, which brings together leading Slovenian research organisations and industrial partners to develop advanced solutions for sustainable, energy-efficient, and digitally connected buildings of the future. The programme addresses key challenges in the field of smart buildings, including the development of advanced energy systems, smart appliances, sustainable construction materials, and digital technologies that enable more efficient management of the entire living environment.

As modern smart buildings rely on interconnected information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) systems, cybersecurity has become a fundamental prerequisite for their reliable operation. Energy systems, building management systems, smart devices, and digital services are becoming increasingly interconnected, making it essential to protect them against cyber threats from the earliest stages of their design.

Within the SMART-LIVING programme, LTFE will develop methods and technologies to ensure the cyber resilience of smart buildings and their digital infrastructure. The research will focus on developing security solutions for IT/OT interoperability, cyber risk assessment, continuous security monitoring, and advanced mechanisms for the detection and mitigation of cyber incidents. Particular emphasis will be placed on securing communications between energy systems, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, building automation systems, and cloud services, which together form the foundation of future smart living environments.

The SMART-LIVING programme also foresees the development of advanced digital services, with cybersecurity playing a key enabling role in establishing trust in these emerging technologies. The solutions developed within the programme will support the secure deployment of smart energy systems, intelligent devices, digital product passports, and other innovations that will shape the future of sustainable living.

Through its participation in SMART-LIVING, LTFE is strengthening its research in the fields of cybersecurity, telecommunications, and intelligent cyber-physical systems while contributing to the development of secure digital technologies for the smart buildings and energy systems of the future. The programme’s research outcomes will make a significant contribution to both the digital and green transitions, supporting the development of trustworthy solutions for modern, connected living environments.
