Among the projects competing for a REGIOSTARS Award is SmartCommUnity (Interreg Alpine Space), one of five finalists in the “A Connected Europe” category. On Tuesday, the project will be presented to the European project community and an expert jury by Dr Jure Trilar of the Laboratory for Telecommunications (LTFE), Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana, as the project’s lead coordinator, and Gianluca Lentini of Consorzio Poliedra, as the project’s initiator. The winners will be announced at the award ceremony on the evening of 14 October.

Over three years, SmartCommUnity brought together partners from six Alpine countries (Slovenia, Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland) to bridge the rural-urban digital divide, turning isolated local initiatives into a connected, transnational smart community. Results include blockchain-based traceability linking more than 100 Slovenian farmers directly with consumers, a shared LoRaWAN sensor network monitoring energy use in 15 Tyrolean municipalities, and the open-source SMART-ALPS.EU platform. The co-created policy recommendations have been integrated into the EU Strategy for the Alpine Region.

Reaching the finals is a major recognition for LTFE and for the whole consortium, and confirms that projects with real impact on local communities stand out at the European level. Jure and Gianluca, we wish you the best of luck!
